Head Coach comments after the match
Head Coach Poyatos: "I think it was a very difficult match. We knew that the match against Kyoto would be like this, and it's not an easy match against any opponent, but I think we managed to hold on today against a really stubborn opponent. In the first half, I think we were able to control the game well. However, we were concerned about a few counterattacks, so we fixed that. After we scored a goal in the second half, we wanted to hold onto the ball more in the final minutes, but the opponent's strength showed, and we were able to withstand the set pieces and escape. However, at the beginning of the season, the team was a bit soft, and we didn't have the strength to bounce back, but each individual brought their personality and pulled the game back, and I think we were able to take the victory in our hands. In soccer, you never know what the situation or team will be like next week, but in the current situation, I think we have become a group with a strong personality."
Q: "I think there was a period at the beginning of the second half where Kyoto seemed to be in control, but what was Head Coach Poyatos thinking at that time?"
Head Coach Poyatos: "I wanted to find an advantage in the midfield, but the pressure from the opponents was so strong that I thought at the beginning of the second half that it was difficult for the players to recognize that advantage in the midfield. However, after enduring that difficult period for about five minutes, we started to play at our own pace, and I think we were able to create good opportunities despite the difficulties until (Fukuda) Yuya's goal. However, I think we really held on at the end of the game."
Q: "You replaced Alano, who usually plays for a long time, around the 60th minute and replaced him with MESHINO, switching the wingers on both sides. What was your intention behind that?"
Head Coach Poyatos said, "As for Alano, if he had received another yellow card, it would have been a tough situation, and he had been showing signs of fatigue since the beginning of training this week. Taking that into consideration, I didn't want him to receive an extra yellow card due to fatigue and miss the next match, so I substituted him."
Q: "What was the intention behind switching the wingers and placing Fukuda on the left?"
Head Coach Poyatos: "The reason I put (Fukuda) Yuya on the left was because I wanted to help (Kurokawa) Keisuke. Looking back at the games against Kyoto, we often saw them advance by using Keisuke there, so I wanted to get a good balance. (Handa) Riku's side was still in a better defensive position than Keisuke's side, so I put Yuya on that side to help Keisuke out."
Q: "I don't think Gamba has scored a goal after the 75th minute this season, but today they scored in the 72nd minute. The reason for this was that substitute player MESHINO gained momentum, which led to the victory, and I think this is something to take into account for the next game. What do you think about MESHINO and how you feel about this way of winning?"
Head Coach Poyatos: "The team really had a strong desire to win, and I think that's what we put all our heart into. We wanted to have more possession of the ball, and we wanted to make it harder for the opponent, so we brought in (Suzuki) Musashi and (Usami) Takashi, and although that didn't go so well in some areas today, I think that Musashi, Takashi, and MESHINO all supported the team."
Q: "Today, the center backs were Miura and Kyungwon, and it seemed like there were a lot of scenes where the center backs kicked long balls, even compared to recent times. Was that a team aim to avoid Kyoto's high press, or was it just the players' judgment on the pitch to kick such balls?"
Head Coach Poyatos: "The players had the information in their heads that the opponents would press from the front in a 5-on-5 formation, and I think that the team's common understanding of where there was space progressed. Kyoto was definitely targeting the passes from the center backs to the side backs, so when they pressed from the front, I told them that the space would open up in the forward and interior areas, and I think the players were able to make a good judgment there. By moving the ball in this way, the opponents were running more distance and becoming more tired, so I think that allowed us to create a form that we could build on."
