Head Coach comments after the match
Head Coach Poyatos: "First of all, I would like to thank all the fans who always supported us even in difficult times. At the same time, the players kept their heads up in daily practice even during the difficult times after the Shonan match, and I think they showed a strong reaction to that. I personally think it was a perfect match. In the first half, I think they proved our playing style that we are going to do, and in the second half, FC Tokyo made solid countermeasures and adjustments, so I think it was difficult to maintain that style, but the players were able to switch from there and in the second half as well. I think the counter attack from there was also excellent. I am very happy from the bottom of my heart. For now, we may have gotten one point out of the group league, but that is irrelevant, and putting that aside, I am very happy and satisfied with the way the players reacted well since last week, from the tough Shonan match. "
Q: "In the first half, we were able to improve by applying pressure in front of the midfield and not letting the opponent carry the ball. Is there anything that Head Coach Poyatos specifically told the players?"
Head Coach Poyatos: "What we told our players in this match was that FC Tokyo would be exerting a lot of pressure from the outside. So we made sure to tell the players how to keep a good sense of distance between each player and how to move the ball. By doing that, FC Tokyo's players ended up running behind the ball, which meant they had to run quite a distance. We had a considerable advantage in the first half, including that, so to be honest, I would have liked to have scored more goals in the first half."
Q: This may be related to your previous answer, but it seemed like interior players DAWHAN and Yuki YAMAMOTO often made plays on the wing to create opportunities. Was that your intention after scouting FC Tokyo?
Head Coach Poyatos: "This is not a strategy for today, but something I've been instilling in the players on a daily basis. This allows for dynamism during the match, and I've been instilling various solutions, including patterns, in the players. For the match against Kawasaki F, rather than tactics, I've been telling the players how to create space and how to use it. By doing this, I think it will be quite difficult for the opponent to defend."
Q: "You've been patient with Sugiyama so far. After he scored his first goal, his judgement improved and he was able to score, which relieved some of the pressure. How do you think Sugiyama's first goal will affect the team?"
Head Coach Poyatos: "I've been following Nao (Sugiyama) since last year. (As Tokushima's Head Coach) Even when we faced Kumamoto as opponents, he was good at breaking down one-on-one situations and scoring goals in front of the goal, and I thought he had a lot of talent when it came to shooting from outside the penalty area, like he did today. I'm sure there was a lot of pressure playing for GAMBA OSAKA, and he needed time. To that end, I would like to continue to support and help him on a daily basis, as I have done until now. And I personally believe that Sugiyama will become an indispensable player for GAMBA OSAKA."
Q: "I think you dominated the game for a long time today, but there's a saying that "the best defense is offense." How do you view today's defense, the first clean sheet this season? And how do you view the recovery from the Shonan match, where you conceded four goals, including in terms of mentality?"
Head Coach Poyatos: "I personally think that this is more a result of mentality than tactics. As a professional player, from the moment you step on the field, it's absolutely necessary to change your mindset to one that is truly about beating your opponents, and it's going to be very harsh to say this, but I think it was absolutely necessary to recognize that they are not friends, but enemies. So, in terms of changing Gamba's previous mentality, it seems very difficult to implement tactics, but I personally think that it is even more difficult to change the mentality. It is difficult to change the mentality of a team, but I want to take the lead here and appeal to the players on a daily basis to make the change."
Q: "KWON Kyung Won won and JEBALI, who were in the starting lineup for the first time in a while, performed well. Could you tell us about the condition of their legs? Did they cramp up when they were substituted? "
Head Coach Poyatos: "I don't think there's any problem. I think it's because I haven't been able to get into the rhythm of a match for a long time, and I think that's why my leg cramped up. I need to understand the situation from now on, so I'm looking at it positively and just thinking that it's fatigue in the form of a cramp in my leg."
